The Mecca Bingo Club in York has been praised for their joint initiative to give away energy saving light bulbs to club members. Mecca Bingo is offering every customer at the club a pack of two environmentally friendly light bulbs for simply going to the club and swiping their membership cards.

This initiative is in partnership with Southern Electric and Mecca Bingo has been praised by an MP. Hugh Bayley the MP for York said that we are living in times where everyone is conscious of the rising costs of both lighting and heating in their homes. By swapping old fashioned light bulbs for the new energy conserving ones it is a great way to save money, as well as energy. As part of this promotion Southern Electric is also giving away free loft and wall cavity insulation to Mecca bingo customers who qualify within certain groups.

The manager of the Mecca bingo club in York, Tim Stobart commented that by conducting this give-away, they are helping customers to take a step in the right direction to reduce energy consumption. The environment is of great concern to everyone and the light bulb give-away does not mean that customers have to pay for these so it doesn’t hit their pockets either.

You have to hand it to Mecca bingo, they really do come up with some innovative ways for raising funds and helping members to save money. I certainly get the feeling that these bingo clubs are very community based.

We previously reported about Mecca Bingo staff sky diving to raise money for the Whizz Kidz charity. Obviously now other clubs have taken on this challenge as another Mecca Bing club takes to the skies in a sponsored sky-dive. Twenty Two year old Arnis Ellis and twenty six year old Cameron Bellis are the next to take a long drop out of an aeroplane in the name of this worthy charity.

Both Arnis, who is a team leader at Mecca Bingo, and Cameron have said that they are not feeling any nerves yet, but if they do their girlfriends will be right at their sides to cheer them on. Cameron has a six year old son, and says that he relates well to the Whizz Kidz charity, he likes to think that if they had a problem, the charity would be there for them too.

Mecca Bingo staff members have already raised ₤100 000 so far nationally and are well on their way to raising the ₤250 000 goal set for Whizz Kidz this year. The Chief Executive Officer of Whizz Kidz, Ruth Owen said that the charity is 100% reliant on donated voluntary funds. They have 70 000 children who are in need of mobility equipment and are thrilled about Mecca Bingo’s sky-diving event. She also wished everyone a safe landing.

It is through initiatives such as this that the game of bingo keeps its good social standing. Bingo has long been used to raise charitable fund and is sure to go on doing so.

A forty three year old Aberdeen man is going to be sharing his bingo winnings with his father and a friend according to an agreement he had with them, should any of them ever win. He won more than ₤32 000 while playing bingo at the Mecca Club in Berryden Road. The winner has been playing at the same bingo club for many years and is very happy to have finally been able to win a substantial jackpot prize

This winner has to share the prize with another player from Hull, who also called bingo in forty five numbers, winning the National Bingo prize of ₤30 000, the Regional prize of ₤1 811 and a house prize in the amount of ₤300. The lucky man said that he though the number of calls he made bingo in was quite high and did not think that he would win, but he did. Apparently his father got quite a shock by the big win.

He is thinking about using his share of the winnings to take his son with him on a holiday abroad.

Again we have evidence that men too are playing bingo. I mean this gent plays with his father and a friend, although the news snippet does not tell us if the friend is male of female, two out of three is pretty significant when all is told.

Mecca Bingo has just pulled off a new coup with the signing of an agreement together with eQube International Inc. They are going to be contracted to provide electronic bingo devices in no fewer than twenty-one Mecca Bingo Clubs throughout the UK. The currently have test sites where they have been using Planet Bingo and Game Tech handheld units. But it appears that eQube has pipped these bidders to the goal posts.

For eQube, this represents a huge milestone and validates the efficiency of their handheld electronic bingo devices as Mecca Bingo is one of the largest UK bingo operators. They also have operations in the online bingo industry. eQube provides solutions for the bingo marketplace, and they have shown great innovation with the introduction of “CenTrax”, a central control and reporting software, as well as “eVent” a point of sale software.

The handheld units are called “Lil Gecko” and these allow the bingo player to enjoy an interactive experience when playing electronic bingo. eQube have been operating out of Canada since 1999 and have electronic bingo equipment installed in seventy-seven bingo halls throughout Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia. This coup represents the ability of eQube to penetration international markets as well as shows confidence from customers regarding the acceptance of handheld electronic bingo devices.

One lucky pensioner from Bridgewater is thanking his lucky stars after having won more than ₤11 000 playing bingo at the Mecca Club in Penel Orlieu. The Duty Manager of the club, Lee Rothery said that the man was completely gob-smacked and he actually didn’t know what to say when they gave him the good news of his winnings. He won ₤10 118 on the national Bingo Game, a Regional prize of ₤1 091 and the house prize of ₤44. That evening the money up for grabs in the National Bingo Game coffers was actually ₤30 354 but two other players, one in Bristol and another in Edinburgh also called full house in forty five numbers so the prize money was split three ways.

The man has been a member of the Mecca Bingo club in Penel Orlieu since 1992, he is a regular player and plays three times a week. Although the winner himself was pretty speechless, and didn’t have much to say, the duty manager did add that they were always really delighted when one of their regular players wins a substantial amount of money. In this instance, I have to admit that I am really curious what the gentleman is going to be spending his prize money on. It is always nice to have a feel about a winner, but In this respect I suppose our secret gentleman is going to remain an enigma.

A female pensioner who wishes to remain anonymous was one of the luckiest winners during the Mecca Bingo, countrywide, £1 million giveaway in free bingo games. The Norwich Pensioner has been given the opportunity to completely change her life with the £150,000 bingo win.

The woman, who turns seventy in February, is a regular bingo player at the All Saints Green Mecca Bingo Club in Norwich, where the massive bingo win took place. She said that she plays sometimes up to six times per week, and this time she was playing with her daughter who is an occasional player. She will be sharing the prize money with her daughter in the true spirit of generosity that bingo players more often than not seem to display.

All Mecca Bingo clubs took part in the Mecca Millionaire bonanza, and they were offering two free bingo daily games each. Mecca Bingo players were given the chance to win £100,000 with one line, £150,000 with two lines and a whopping £264,288.50 for a full house.

Mecca Bingo, despite its struggle to keep its head above water due to discriminatory taxes and the smoking ban, have managed to make three new millionaires in the past four months. This is thanks to new laws that allow bingo operators to retain a share of the members stake in order to accumulate large jackpots for the winning pool.

There have been quite a few big winners since the change in the gambling laws became effective in September. The new laws allowing for the roll-over of stakes have allowed many bingo establishments to offer large jackpots.

One of the latest winners is a seventy-six year old man from Eye who picked up a ₤40,000 jackpot on December 3rd. The man won the money in while playing at the Norwich Mecca Bingo Club. He plans to use the money to buy a new car. He won the ₤40,000 jackpot, along with the ₤54 house prize, by scoring bingo in forty-two calls.

Wins of this magnitude and larger are becoming rather common because of the change in the regulations. Even while the new regulations allow for larger jackpots, there is a big drop in attendance figures due to the smoking ban. The larger prizes are not enough to compensate for not being able to smoke while you play bingo, as the drop in the attendance figures shows.

Many people have decided to forego their brick and mortar bingo playing for online bingo playing. Apparently the lure of the big jackpots is not enough to overcome the desire to smoke while playing.

The mighty Rank Group is finding out just how harsh this ban is hitting their bingo gaming operations. Ian Burke, Chief Executive has had to deal with everything since he took the job, from the gambling taxes on the bingo game were increased to what bingo.

Operators are paying now, a whopping seventeen percent as well as a fifteen percent levy on the gross profits. Now the smoking laws have came into effect, which has created havoc among the bingo gaming industry.

Now the Rank Group has found that has turned to the internet side of their business, the Rank Group’s decision to concentrate on online bingo, even after they built costly smoking shelters outside eighty of the group’s bingo halls. This causes concerns beyond Rank’s falling profits.

Many towns are closing the local gaming hall due to the decline, causes a serious loss of social network as the communities experience under the Smoking Ban Legislation. Disadvantaged urban locations and small rural communities suffered a loss of pastime, but they have also lost a crucial social support network and income that the bingo gaming hall brings into the communities.

Meanwhile, Rank’s Group stock price has dropped twenty four percent since January 2007. While Chief Executive Burke will go up market with Mecca Bingo, and by lying off two hundred jobs has cut costs, he and his colleagues are praying for a dismissal of the double tax on bingo owners in return of saving a national pastime.
