Online bingo is this generation’s way of playing and has only been around for 14 years, however the Bingo brand has been around for centuries. Below are some interesting facts and statistics which make Bingo what it is in the modern world today.
- The first recording of the game was made way back at around 1530 in Italy, although there are indications which suggest that it was enjoyed in ancient times by Roman soldiers when they wasn’t at war.
- When formed in Italy it was known as “Lo Giucco del lotto”. And to this day it is still known as that and is played on a weekly basis!
- The game got more popular and quickly spread across Europe all the way to France in the late 1700’s.
- The game became increasingly popular once more in Europe in the 1800’s and many different variations were tried out.
- In Germany they created a method using Bingo to teach students math, English and history.
- The biggest bingo event to date took place in New York, according to him up to 60,000 eager players turned up, and that he had to turn away 10,000!
- Before the name “bingo” the game was known as “Beano”, players would daub their numbers by placing a bean on top, players would claim a win by shouting out “beano”.
- It was only in 1929 when “Bingo” first came about. A player yelled “bingo” instead of “beano” in America when claiming a win.
- British Military inherited it to pass the time whilst out at sea. It was known then as “housy housy”
